How does being an OT work?

Summit has a roster of OTs that our teachers refer to when they need coverage.  You simply let us know your availability and which school(s) you can cover -- this is updated every month or on a need to basis when things change on your end.

How many hours will I be working?

It’s hard to say.  As an occasional teacher you will be on call.  Coverage is required in the following cases: (1) teacher is absent due to illness (2) teacher is going on vacation (3) teacher has a meeting or networking event to attend (4) teacher requires assistance due to increase in enrollment.

What are the hours?

Summit’s class hours are usually 8:00 am to 2:30 pm.  You may be asked to cover between 2 to 6 hours (even more in some cases).  OT’s working more than 4 hours must take a ½-hour unpaid lunch.  For instance, when an OT works from 8am to 2:30pm, this is 6 hours of paid work.

How much notice will I be given?

OTs are given plenty of notice. In rare cases, when a teacher is sick or has an emergency, you may get called early in the morning.  When this happens, class start time may be changed to when the OT can come in.

What can I expect when I fill in?

You will have notes from the teacher on what the students are working on.  Students have their own monthly goals and guides to follow so they’re expected to know what to work on (some students work independently and some are dependent on the instructor).   OT duties are: supervising the school/students, answering student’s questions, checking-in on student’s progress, marking, giving out handouts/resources and light reporting (e.g. attendance tracking, and follow-up notes for the teacher).  On a side note, our students like to talk and getting to know the OTs so you can expect a few conversations.  This is fine, as it builds rapport and trust, but eventually the OT has the student refocus back to their work.
